Mostly I get upset because I don't think my stylist understands curly hair well enough, nor do I seem to have the ability to explain what I want. I would like to state that I really like my stylist and she is trying to learn, and I don't think I have a better option in my area of the world. (Their are stylist who specialize in curly hair, but not in my remote backdesert.) A while back I didn't get my hair cut by a professional for three years and I snipped it myself because everyone else wanted to hack it off, make it behave, and generally just didn't get curly hair.
I decided to use the flat iron to calm the Eddie look down and flat ironing my hair makes it seem like it grew a foot since no matter how long I have let it get it, the curls always spring up to right around my collar. I admit it had been a long time since I had done it, and it was drastic change to see my hair straight.
However at my mom's birthday party, Saturday night, the reactions started to get under my skin. The compliments were fine until one my mother's oldest friends who often has encouraged me to chemically straighten my hair, went on and on about it. I try to grin and bear it, knowing she hates her coarse curly hair and is always fighting it. When other relatives started suggesting I get it done chemically I started to get hot under my collar.
My family aren't the only ones who feel that way. The lady on the Millionaire Matchmaker told one girl who to straighten her hair, men don't like it curly she said. I know other people who religiously blow dry theirs out every day, and would rather be caught dead than curly. I have had other people tell me they will take me more seriously with straight hair, it looks more polished put together.
Maybe I am a rebel, but I want to wear it curly. Some people actually pay good money to get their hair curly like mine. I am not talking a frizzy mess or unkempt hair. I get nice defined curls most of the time, or at least I think I do. I am bugged because apparently many people see me as mess with my hair au natural, not the way I see my ringlets with love. In fact there is a whole website devoted to girls like me who love their curly locks.
It can be fun to have straight hair for a while, like having a secret identity, but it is a lot more work than I normally do on my hair, because I have two small boys who can make a big mess in the half an hour it takes to straighten my hair. (That is on a good day, it often takes longer.) I can't fathom why they think the change should be permanent.
Culturally I wonder why people see the straight hair as the better option. Sugar & Spice had an interesting post about it from another race's perspective. I can't help but think of Julia Louis-Dreyfuss who has progressed from a bunch of frizzy curls, to tamed curls, and then to straight. Maybe it is an attempt to break the Seinfield curse?

Chicky, I think you look fantastic both ways! A good friend of mine jazzes up her curly locks with highlights... have you tried that?
Hair is always a "grass is always greener" thing to me. I love how curly hair looks. I have stick straight hair, which my best friend used to try to curl with her curling iron, then reinforce with Aqua Net. Then, like a great catastrophe it would fall flat. Remember the big bangs of the 80's and 90's? Unattainable to me.
Your recent haircut looks so drastically different, but good!
My mom loves it when I have shorter hair, but I think the reason why is because when I have longer hair and pull it back, it reminds her of herself a long time ago, and maybe those weren't good times? So I wonder if comments made to you is more about their comfort than yours.
I think the bigger issue is finding smeone who can cut your hair how you like it. I just found a lady after 3 years of some BAD cuts. I almost felt protective about my hair during that time.
I love your curls but then I am biased. I have had curly hair all my life. when i was a kid the only way to tame it was to have long braids. they didnt have the good flatirons they have now. I have tried flat-ironing my hair but it takes too dang log and im never happy with it so i let it do what it wants. I would rather see you with your natural curls. I like it much better. You and I should get together and go to one of the fancy salons that do curly hair. That would be kinda fun but we'd have to save for a year to be able to afford it probably.

Hola Amiga how are you, it's Patricia "Venezolanisima in the Bahamas".
You know, I cannot see why people will hate your curls, you are lucky enough to have smooth and defined curls. Everyone have opinions and would like to change others according to their taste but at the end, if curls makes you happy well VIVA curls, go for it and enjoy it because a lot of people will love to have them. Once in a while it is good to go strait for a change or do something different.
I read that when you want your stylist to know exactly what you want you should clip out photos of different hair stiles from magazines or print photos online and take it to them so they could really see.
Keep in touch Amiga and thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on my spaces page.
Chaito.
Thanks for stopping by and entering my contest!
Oh dear... the delimna that I know ALL TOO WELL!!! To curl or not to curl...
Personally - I dig the curl. I hate looking like everyone else. But that's just me. I like the curl because it adds whimsy to a look.
To say one is more professional than another - impossible. Professionalism isn't based on hair!!! I don't need to get into that though.
You look lovely with either look. But my personal preference is curl. Always have. Always will. But then again - I am very biased. LOL!!!
Ciao bella,
KC
Aren't you lucky - it works for you both ways - smiles! You're right, straight hair is more work! If I had pretty curls like you, that would be it - hands, and flat irons, down!
What a bunch of fence riders!
I'll take a side. I'm leaning toward the straight look. Don't know if it is a lot of work, but I think I like it better.
... oh yeah, and it doesn't matter what hair style you choose because its your inner beauty that counts!
I think men like hair long and curly. i think women like hair straight. I style mine both ways, but I know my husband prefersthe curls.
Straight hair might be good on occasion, but I love your curly hair. I try everyday to get my hair curly! Everyone has straight hair- if that is a way for us to be different, I'll take it! Pretty soon curly hair will come back into fashion and you will be on the forefront.
You have beautiful hair- I've always been jealous.

I think Bird just called me a chick.
@Malathionman--She is the bird and she knows chics. Thanks for taking a side, women like to be diplomatic I guess.
@Elizabeth -- does grey count as a highlight. I leave a spot at the top that is nice and white for fun. It shows up better some days than other. My hubby called me Elvira with my hair straight because of it.
I love, love, love curls! My hair was straight all my life until about 2 years ago and now it has some curl! I scrunch and scrunch to *maximize* the effect and it PAINS me to think you are trying to straighten the curls OUT! lol
You really look good either way and it must be nice to have the versatility!
Curls all the way! Of course I'm biased too but I love the curls. It's fun, different and so unique. People pay good money for it so rock out what you have for FREE. People have actually argued with me that I perm my hair, uh, lol, yeah, no. Jerks.
